Gasquet defects from 2008 Davis Cup quarterfinals
The French 2008 Davis Cup quarterfinal camp has suffered another blow ahead of this weekend’s quarterfinal tie with the United States, with their second star player defecting from the early rounds of the tie.
Richard Gasquet will join Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on the sidelines this weekend, with painful hand blisters ruling him out of his singles game against American star Andy Roddick. Gaquet has hinted that he may play in the second round of singles ties on Sunday if his condition improves over the weekend.
With both of France’s star players out of the action, beleaguered French captain Guy Foget will be forced into substituting Paul-Henri Mathieu and Michael Llodra into Friday’s singles games against Andy Roddick and James Blake.
Meanwhile the Russian team for the quarterfinal tie against the Czech Republic has been bolstered by the news that star player Marat Safin will be participating in this weekend’s 2008 Davis Cup quarterfinals after originally being omitted from the team sheet.
A total of 8 players in the ATP top 10 will be participating in this weekend’s Davis Cup quarterfinal action.
