Murray lambasts Davis Cup teammates
Andy Murray’s participation in future Davis Cup matches for the British Davis Cup team is in doubt following his team’s defeat at the hands of Austria on the weekend.
While Murray won both of his singles matches in the Davis Cup tie against Austria, his performances were not enough to prevent the Austrians from eliminating the British from the Davis Cup world group.
The blame for Britain losing their Davis Cup tie is likely to be laid at the feet of Alex Bogdanovic, who lost both of his rubbers, including the crucial fifth and final rubber which could have secured World Group participation for his team.
“If I make a sacrifice I think every single person in the team should be willing to make those sacrifices and say they will give it all they’ve got,” Murray said in the wake of his team’s defeat.
“I want them to say they are physically able to play even if they have to play three days of five-set matches. Then I know everyone on the team wants to play as badly as I do.”
British team captain John Lloyd eventually took responsibility for his team’s defeat, by pointing out that he could have played Andy Murray with brother Jamie in the crucial doubles rubber on Saturday, which the British duo of Jamie Murray and Ross Hutchins lost.
“If Andy had played the doubles it would have been closer and I’d like another go at it. “But it was my decision and you’re wrong sometimes and other times you are right.”
