Spain to meet Argentina in Davis Cup final
Spain advanced to the final of the 2008 Davis Cup on Sunday, courtesy of a straight sets routing of Andy Roddick by Rafael Nadal.
Nadal was in imperious form as he blasted Roddick off the court 6-4, 6-0, 6-4 in front of 22,000 Spanish supporters. The point secured the tie for the Spanish, giving them an unassailable 3-1 lead going into the final match of the day.
Feliciano Lopez was then left to confront Sam Querry in a dead rubber, putting away his American opponent in straight sets to set the final score at 4-1 to the Spanish.
“Today I play an almost perfect match and it is very, very exciting,” said Nadal, whose seemingly neverending season will now take him to the Davis Cup final in November.
The Spanish will face Argentina in the final of the Davis Cup courtesy of Argentina’s 3-2 defeat of Russia on Sunday.
The second Davis Cup semi-final went down to the wire after Nikolay Davydenko defeated David Nalbandian in the third singles rubber to draw level with the Spanish at 2-2.
This left teenage sensation Juan Martin del Potro with the task of defeating Igor Andreev, which he went on to do with ease, securing his team’s third point by defeating the Russian 6-4, 6-2, 6-1.
“If someone had told me in July that I would win four titles and reach the Davis Cup final, I would not have believed them,” a delighted del Potro said after helping his team reach the Davis Cup final.
