Federer still to commit to Swiss Davis Cup tie
Roger Federer is yet to commit to Switzerland’s opening tie for the 2009 Davis Cup season.
The world number two appears to be waiting for the United States team to announce where in the country their game against Switzerland will be held next year, with the tie scheduled to be held just days before the start of the new 1,000 Series in Indian Wells.
Federer has not played in a first round Davis Cup tie since 2004, when he played for Switzerland against Romania. However, his participation in the recent World Group playoff against Belgium is said to have renewed his enthusiasm for helping his team progress through the World Group.
While Stanlislas Wawrinka has already confirmed his participation in the first round of the Davis Cup, Swiss tennis fans will have to wait until later this week to hear whether or not Federer will step into the breach next year.
“My priorities are to get my world No. 1 ranking back and concentrate on winning Wimbledon and the US Open again” Federer said of his plans for next year. “The chances of playing against the States don’t look too bad”.
