Nalbandian denies Davis Cup dust-up
David Nalbandian has denied rumours that he and doubles partner Augustin Callieri came to blows following the Argentinean duo’s loss to Spain in the doubles rubber of the 2008 Davis Cup final.
Nalbandian has said that the reports that suggested that he and Callieri had been involved in a fight in the corridors of the Islas Malvinas Stadium following their Davis Cup defeat were fabricated by the press to spice up the occasion.
“It really hurts the players when people say things that aren’t true,” Nalbandian said. The Argentinean was also unimpressed by rumours that he had quit the team in the aftermath of the Davis Cup final defeat to Spain.
“It bothers me that people have questioned whether I’m continuing with the Davis Cup or not,” he said. “For me, representing my country is really an honour. I’m going to continue - like I’ve done until this point - defending Argentina’s flag the best way possible.”
Nalbandian, the world number 11, was the only Argentinean to score a point at the 2008 Davis Cup final, defeating David Ferrer in the first match of the tournament.
