Davis Cup Rankings

The Ranking System

Tommy Robredo of Spain returns a shot to Bob Bryan during the fourth rubber of the Davis Cup 2007 All 135 nations contesting the Davis Cup are ranked by the International Tennis Federation (ITF).

Davis Cup rankings are updated after each World Group round. Each nation is ranked according to its current performance, as well as its performance over the past three years. So each ranking represents the success of a nation over a four-year period. After each World Group round, points are allocated to each country and any results that fall outside the four-year period fall away.

Current results have more clout than past results – points gained from the second, third, and fourth years of the Davis Cup ranking period are reduced by 25%, 50% and 75% respectively. Only the victorious teams are allocated points.

If a nation defeats a higher-ranked nation, it receives bonus points as well as round points for the win. In addition, a winning nation playing at an opposition venue will be awarded 25% of the round points as bonus points. For example, if a nation playing away from home receives 20 round points and 20 bonus points for a win, it will be allocated a total of 40 points plus 25% of the round points. Bonus points are not awarded to Groups III and IV in the various Zones.

Davis Cup Seeding

The ITF uses the rankings of each country to identify the seeds for the competition. All levels or groups of the competition are seeded according to each nation’s performance.

The only exception to this rule is that the first and second seed of the World Group are always the Davis Cup finalists of the previous year.
