Davis Cup Venues
There are many Davis Cup venues although there are a number of excellent facilities that are used frequently. The semi-final ties that took place recently where held in Moscow and Gothenburg.
Russia versus Germany – The Olympic Stadium, Moscow
The Davis Cup venue for the semi-final tie between Russia and Germany was the Olympic Stadium located at 16 Olympisky Prospect, Moscow.
Known locally as the Olimpiisky, the stadium is a large indoor arena, originally built for the Summer Olympics of 1980. The full venue can comfortably house 80,000 people. It is also home to the Kremlin Cup Tournament.
The stadium has hosted the Davis Cup finals on several occasions. For tennis, only a quarter of the floor space is used so seating capacity is for 10,500 spectators.
The semi-final was contested on a red clay surface with a ‘Head ATP clay court’ ball.
Sweden versus USA – Scandinavium, Gothenburg
Sweden battled the USA at the Scandinavium in Gothenburg, Sweden.
The Scandinavium is an indoor arena situated in the entertainment district of Gothenburg. The stadium was built to celebrate the 350th anniversary of Gothenburg and is surrounded by the Museum of World Culture, the Universeum and Sweden’s largest movie theatre.
Designed by architect Poul Hultberg, the arena was opened in 1971 and has been selected as a championship venue on several occasions. It receives over 700,000 visitors annually and accommodates concerts, trade shows, sporting events and corporate functions.
